Displaying Credit Card Checking Status

We're having trouble with impatient users pushing the final submit button
more than once and generating two orders as a result.
Is there a non-JavaScript way for minivend to return credit card checking
status back to the user while that is happening instead of waiting for it
all to finish and then display a receipt page?
What I'd really like is when they push the final order button is for their
screen to clear and a message to appear at the top "checking your card info
to see if it looks like a credit card" then after that is successful
"contacting credit card bureau for authorization, this may take a minute"
then after that is successful "authorization approved". Then the receipt
is displayed, or if it the cc authorization failed, the previous page
(which is designed to handle errors generated from it) or a link to it.
If the above isn't possible, my main goal is to take the submit button away
from people after they've pushed it once so they can't push it again until
after the processing completes (unless they try really hard to do it).
Has anyone done this? And if so how!
